Jess just recently returned from Kuching, Malaysia where she presented at the International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC) on behalf of Sharks Pacific and James Cook University, where she’s enrolled for her PhD. As a member of the interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Colin Simpfendorfer, together they hosted a session called “Can MPAs Save Sharks?”
Jess’ presentation highlighted some of the policy inconsistencies in current shark protections that may be hindering a reduction in shark mortality. And, whether there are issues in the wording of the policies themselves that leave loopholes for more sharks to be killed, despite them supposedly being protected under these policies.
We look forward to keeping you updated on the findings and outcomes of Jess’ research on this topic.
