Sharks Pacific has recently had a presence in two very impactful, but very different, publications. First, on May 18, 2018, Jess had a letter accepted and printed in the scientific journal Science, which discussed the quiet dilution of the Marshall Islands Shark Sanctuary. It highlighted the role of politics in conservation, the immense pressure put on governments by foreign fishing interests, and the conservation community’s prior track record of disappearing once legislation has been enacted.
Secondly, the July 2018 issue of National Geographic Magazine has a short profile on Jess’ work. The article, How to Save a Predator, documents Jess as she places Baited Remote Underwater Video systems in the waters around her home island Rarotonga. Reflecting on the experience, Jess said,
“It was surreal to have a journalist and a photographer here following me around for a week, but I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity and proud to have a platform as large as Nat Geo sharing a piece of my story—and of Sharks Pacific’s work.”
